“Nagasaki: Life After Nuclear War” by Susan Southard chronicles aftermath of atomic bomb that struck Japanese city in 1945, decimating its population and testing the will of its survivors. The US B-29 superfortress Bockscar dropped the atomic bomb nicknamed 'Fat Man,' which detonated above the ground, on northern part of Nagasaki City just after 11am.Sumiteru Taniguchi was on his bicycle delivering mail through the hills of northwest Nagasaki when suddenly a burning wind picked him up, then slammed him facedown on the pavement.Hordes of injured passed them, “their bodies burned and bloated, naked except for torn clothing stuck to their wounds.” Some would lunge at them, begging for water; others collapsed and died at their feet. She scrambled past the blackened husks of her co-workers to get...

Nagasaki Prefecture sits on the northwest tip of Kyushu - Japan's southernmost main island. The main city has played an important role as a port open to foreign traders throughout Japan's lengthy history, and as such is home to a mismatch of Japanese and Western influences.

Japan travel guide to what to do and eat in Miyajima, Hiroshima in a day! Hiroshima is near the bottom of the main island Honshu and a must visit when coming to Hiroshima is the island Itsukushima, more popularly known as Miyajima. It’s one of Japan’s top 3 scenic sights, most famous for its giant torii gate, which at high tide seems to float on the water. Miyajima island is also a great place for a day trip from the Kansai region like Kyoto and Osaka but I would recommend staying in Hiroshima for a few days to explore Hiroshima city and another day for Miyajima island. I started my trip off at Hiroshima station and took a 25 minute train ride to JR Miyajima-guchi station. From there it’s less than a 5 minute walk to the ferry terminal where you will take a 10 minute ferry ride to go t...

We were going to spend the day in Huis Ten Bosch, but after spending 4 hours there last night, we'd had enough. So in a change of itinerary, we decided to head to a couple of hours south on the local train to Nagasaki, a nice city, that just happened to be the site of the second nuclear bomb attack. Local trains are slow, but are really nice to get the vibe of a place. We caught the train on the Sunday, yet it was filled with teenagers in their school uniforms. You know it’s hard core when they're off to school on a Sunday. There was a group of old women next to us, gossiping about all the sights. There was an old lady behind us looking like she was talking into a Bluetooth headset, except she didn't have one. That was weird. Finally, we made it to Nagasaki. The main reason we came here ...

I spent 2 days in Nagasaki and this is what happened. It wasn't until I was editing the video that I realized how history-based this trip was. Things YOU need to know before you visit the Kyushu region in Japan. First, Kyushu is a paradise for travelers looking to get off the beaten track and see the unseen Japan. The lush green countryside is home to active volcanoes, waterfalls, natural hot springs, and semi-tropical coastlines. Kyushu is the Southwestern most island with a population of 13 Million. Kyushu literally means Nine Provinces, although it’s only got 7 prefectures now. Kyushu's strategic position near South Korea and China have allowed it to act as a focal point of cultural, religious, and artistic exchanges since the ancient Japanese world. Fukuoka is closer to Seoul than Tokyo. Lot’s of International visitors. Quite mountainous, Japan’s most active Volcano (Mt. Aso) 2. Hot Springs appropriately Kyushu is calle...
